Chapter 16
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed
Verse 1: By the time Jesus had crossed over in the boat to the other side again, a large crowd assembled around him; and he was by the sea. | Mark 5:21
Then a leader of the synagogue, named Jairus, came and in seeing Jesus, fell at his feet | Mark 5:22
and pleaded with him urgently, “My little daughter is at the near death. Please come and place your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.” | Mark 5:23
because he had an only daughter, almost twelve years old, and she lay dying. | Luke 8:42
So Jesus went with him. And a large crowd followed all around and pressed on them both. | Mark 5:24
Now a certain woman was there who had been suffering from bleeding for twelve years. | Mark 5:25
She had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all that she had, and yet her condition grew worse instead of getting better, | Mark 5:26
having heard about Jesus, she came in the crowd behind him and touched his cloak. | Mark 5:27
for she said to herself, “If I may touch his cloak, I shall be healed!” | Mark 5:28
Immediately her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured of her affliction. | Mark 5:29
At once, immediately knowing that the power had gone out of him. Jesus turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my cloak?” | Mark 5:30
And his disciples answered, “You see the crowd pressing against you; and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” | Mark 5:31
And he looked around at everyone to see who had done it. | Mark 5:32
But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, because I know that power had gone out from me.” | Luke 8:46
When the woman knew that she could not escape notice, she came trembling and falling down before him. In the presence of everyone she declared the reason why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed. | Luke 8:47
He told her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Now go in peace, and be released from your suffering.” | Mark 5:34
Raising Jairus' Daughter
While he was still speaking, some came from the synagogue leader’s house saying, “Your daughter has died. Why should you trouble the teacher any further?” | Mark 5:35
But upon hearing this, Jesus said to the synagogue leader, “Do not be afraid; have belief, and she will be saved.” | Mark 5:36, Luke 8:50
He allowed no one else to accompany him except for Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. | Mark 5:37
When they arrived at the synagogue leader’s house, they saw a commotion, many people weeping and wailing loudly. | Mark 5:38
When Jesus had entered in, he said to them, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” | Mark 5:39
And they all laughed and made fun of him. Then he forced them all outside and took the child’s parents and those who were with him and went upstairs where the child was. | Mark 5:40
And taking the child by the hand gently, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” | Mark 5:41
Instantly the girl rose up and began to walk about. At this they were overwhelmed with amazement. | Mark 5:42
Jesus repeatedly cautioned them that no one should know what happened and asked them to give her something to eat. | Mark 5:43
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men
As Jesus was passing on from there, two blind men began to follow him, who kept calling out loudly, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” | Matthew 9:27
When he went into the house, the blind men approached him, and he asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” | Matthew 9:28
Then he placed his hands on their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you, according to your faith.” | Matthew 9:29
Then their eyes were opened and Jesus sternly warned them, “Ensure that no one knows of this.” | Matthew 9:30
But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that whole region. | Matthew 9:31
Jesus Heals One Who Was Mute
After they were leaving, a demon-possessed man who was unable to speak from birth was brought to Jesus. | Matthew 9:32
And after the demon had been expelled, the one who had been mute began to speak, and the crowds were astonished saying, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.” | Matthew 9:33
But the Pharisees maintained, “It is by the ruler of the demons that he casts out the demons.” | Matthew 9:34
The Harvest Is Great, the Laborers Few
Then Jesus went through all the villages, towns, and cities, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming to all the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness. | Matthew 9:35
But when he saw the crowds, his heart swelled with compassion for them because they were distressed, for some had fainted and many were helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. | Matthew 9:36
Then he spoke to his disciples, “The harvest is truly abundant, but the laborers are few; | Matthew 9:37
therefore pray to the Lord of the fields to send out more laborers into his harvest.” | Matthew 9:38
The Mission of the Twelve
Then calling his twelve disciples to him, | Matthew 10:1
these are the names of his twelve apostles: the first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee and his brother John; | Matthew 10:2
James son of Alphaeus and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew who was a tax collector; | Matthew 10:3
Judas Iscariot and Simon the Zealot, the one who betrayed him. | Matthew 10:4
Then he started to send them out two by two, giving them power and authority over the unclean spirits | Mark 6:7
and heal the sick; raise the dead; cleanse lepers. Freely you have received; therefore freely give. | Matthew 10:8
He instructed that they should take along nothing for their journey but for a staff: no bread, no bag, no money in their belts, | Mark 6:8
and to wear sandals but not a second tunic. | Mark 6:9
As you go, proclaim this message, ‘The kingdom of heaven is come at hand.’ | Matthew 10:7
He explained to them, “Wherever you shall enter a house, greet it and stay there until you leave the place. | Mark 6:10
Irrespective on whether the house is worthy or not, let your peace come upon it.” | Matthew 10:13
Stay on guard against the world. I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. You, however, be as wise as serpents and as innocent as doves. | Matthew 10:16, Gospel of Thomas 39
So they went out and proclaimed to all that they should repent (which meant to change their mind and their ways). | Mark 6:12
They expelled many demons and anointed many who were sick with oil and healed them. | Mark 6:13
