Chapter 18
Healing the Sick in Gennesaret
Verse 1: When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored the boat there. | Mark 6:53
As soon as they descended out of the boat, people immediately recognized Jesus, | Mark 6:54
and hurried throughout that whole region and brought the sick on makeshift beds, to wherever they heard he was. | Mark 6:55
And wherever he entered into villages or cities or farms, they placed the sick in the public squares and pleaded that they might feel even the fringe of his cloak, for all who touched it were healed. | Mark 6:56
The Bread from Heaven
The next day the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realised that there had been only one boat present. They also saw that Jesus had not boarded the boat with the disciples but that they had left without him. | John 6:22
Other boats from Tiberias pulled in near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread and fish after the Lord had given thanks. | John 6:23
So when the crowd realised that neither Jesus nor his disciples were present, they boarded onto the boats and went to Capernaum in order to look for Jesus. | John 6:24
When they located him on the other side of the sea, someone asked him, “When did you come here, Rabbi?” | John 6:25
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, I tell you, you are looking for me not because you had seen miraculous signs but because you ate of the loaves and were satisfied. | John 6:26
Do not work for the food that leads you to perish, but for the food that leads to eternal life, of which I, the Son of Man will give you. For my Father has set his seal upon me.” | John 6:27
Then they asked him, “What shall we do to perform his works?” | John 6:28
Jesus answered them, “This is the work of the Father, that you love your brother and sister like your own soul, guard them like the pupil of your eye.” | John 6:29, Gospel of Thomas 25
So they asked him, “What sign will you perform, then, so that we can see it and believe you? What will you do? | John 6:30
Our ancestors had manna in the wilderness, like it is in your scriptures, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” | John 6:31
Then Jesus said to them, “In truth I say to you, Moses could not have given you bread from heaven, but now it is my Father who gives you the actual, true bread from heaven. | John 6:32
For the bread of my Father is the one coming down out of heaven and gives life to the world.” | John 6:33
So they said to him, “Master, give us this bread always.” | John 6:34
Jesus answered, “Whoever comes to me and does the will of the Father shall never be hungry or thirsty. | John 6:35
But I have said, that you have seen me and still do not believe in me. | John 6:36
Anyone who comes to me to do good works, I shall never turn away, | John 6:37
for I have came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. | John 6:38
And this is the will of him who sent me, that there is light within a person of light, and that they light up the whole world. | Gospel of Thomas 24
This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who hear the Son and do his will, shall have eternal life and will enter the kingdom.” | John 6:40
Then the crowd began to complain and murmur about Jesus because he was claiming to be the bread that came down from heaven. | John 6:41
They kept asking each other, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph and Mary, whose parents we know? What does he mean by, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” | John 6:42
Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble and murmur among yourselves. | John 6:43
No one can come to me unless they are drawn by the works of the Father, he who sent me. | John 6:44
Perceive what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become revealed to you. | Gospel of Thomas 5
Your ancestors did eat the manna in the wilderness given by your father, and they died. | John 6:49
Truly, truly I say to you. Whoever does my will has eternal life. | John 6:47
For whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me; I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to them, and he will not die.” | Gospel of Thomas 108
The crowd began disputing among themselves in angry debate, saying, “How can we drink from this man's mouth? This is unclean! Does he not know the law?” | John 6:52
He said these things while he taught in the synagogue at Capernaum. | John 6:59
The Words of Eternal Life
On hearing the words of Jesus, the disciples said, “This teaching is difficult; who can understand it?” | John 6:60
But Jesus, aware that his disciples were murmuring about it and he asked them, “Does this offend you? | John 6:61
Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? Would you believe then? | John 6:62
It is the spirit that gives life because the flesh can only give death. The words that I have given to you are spirit and life. | John 6:63
If the flesh came into existence because of spirit, it is a wonder. But if spirit came into existence because of the body, it is a wonder of wonders. But, I am amazed at how this great wealth has made its home in this poverty. | Gospel of Thomas 29
However there are some of you who do not believe in me.” Jesus knew from the beginning that some would not believe and who was the one who would betray him. | John 6:64
And he said, “Because of this I have told you that no one can approach me unless they do the will of the Father.” | John 6:65
Upon hearing this, many of his disciples turned their backs and walked with him no longer. | John 6:66
Jesus said, “I took my place in the midst of the world, and I appeared to them in the flesh. I found all of them drunken; I found none of them thirsty. | Gospel of Thomas 28
And my soul became afflicted for the children of humanity, because they are blind in their hearts and do not see that they came empty into the world, and again empty they seek to leave the world. | Gospel of Thomas 28
But for the moment they are drunk. When they shake off their wine, then they will repent.” | Gospel of Thomas 28
So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also desire to leave as well?” | John 6:67
Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go to? You have the words of eternal life. | John 6:68
We have come to believe and know who you truly are.” | John 6:69
