Chapter 2
The Testimony of John the Baptist
Verse 1: And this is the testimony of John the Baptist when the religious authorities of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us.” | John 1:19, John 3:22
He confessed “I am John, an Essene, one who waits in the desert for the coming age.” and did not deny it. | John 1:20
And they asked him, “Are you Elijah?” John said, “I am not.” “Then are you a prophet?” He answered, “No.” | John 1:21
And they had been sent from the Pharisees, on the authority of the Temple. | John 1:24
So they questioned him, “For what reason, do you immerse people in water if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the prophet?” | John 1:25
John answered them, “I ritually cleanse with water for no one is purified unless he turns from wickedness first. Our way keeps the body and the soul in purity before God”. | John 1:26
This happened in Bethany, across the Jordan river, where John was practicing his faith. | John 1:28
The First Disciples of Jesus
It was then about four o’clock in the afternoon. | John 1:39
As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, | Matthew 4:18
he saw two boats by the edge of the lake; the fishermen, having come down from them and were washing their nets. | Luke 5:2
And he got into the boat that belonged to Simon, and asked him to push off a little from the shore. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. | Luke 5:3
When he had stopped speaking, he looked at Simon and said, “Push off into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” | Luke 5:4
Simon replied, “Master, we have worked through the whole night and have caught nothing. But because you say so, I will throw out the nets again.” | Luke 5:5
When they had done this, they caught a very large number of fish, a hundred fifty-three of them. So many, that their nets began to tear open. | Luke 5:6, John 21:11
And they gestured wildly to their companions in the other boat to help them; and they came and loaded both boats so full that they began to sink. | Luke 5:7
But when Simon saw all this, he dropped to his knees in front of Jesus saying, “Master, leave me, for I am a sinful man!” | Luke 5:8
For he and his companions who were with him, were amazed at the haul of fish that they had caught, | Luke 5:9
and so, too, were James and John, Zebedee son's, who were Simon's partners. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from this moment you will be called Peter and and I will send you out to catch people!” | Luke 5:10
And, when they had brought their boats ashore, they left all things, everything they had and followed him. | Luke 5:11
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
The following day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He sought out Philip and said, “Follow me.” | John 1:43
Now Philip was from the city of Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter. | John 1:44
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found him of whom the law of Moses and the Prophets wrote about, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” | John 1:45
Nathanael asked him, “Can anything of good come from Nazareth?” Philip replied, “Come and see.” | John 1:46
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he exclaimed, “Look! A true Israelite in whom is no deceit!” | John 1:47
Nathanael inquired, “How do you know me?” Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” | John 1:48
Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, are you a teacher sent from Heaven? You speak with authority not of men!” | John 1:49
Jesus answered him and said, “Are you convinced because I said that I saw you beneath the fig tree? You will see greater wonders than these.” | John 1:50
The Wedding at Cana
On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. | John 2:1
Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding. | John 2:2
When the wine ran out, his mother said to him, “There is no wine left.” | John 2:3
And Jesus replied, “Woman, what does that have to do with me and to you? My time has not yet come.” | John 2:4
Knowing that a son always listens to his mother; she told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” | John 2:5
Standing nearby were six stone jars for Jewish ceremonial washing, each holding twenty or thirty gallons of water. | John 2:6
Jesus gestured to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And so they filled them up to the very top. | John 2:7
He said to them, “Now take some out, and bring it to the one in charge of the banquet.” and they did. | John 2:8
When the one in charge tasted the water that had been turned into wine and did not know where this vintage had come from (though it was no secret to the servants who had drawn the water), he set the bridegroom aside | John 2:9
and said to him, “Everyone puts the good wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the good wine until now.” | John 2:10
The first of his miracles, Jesus had performed in Cana of Galilee and revealed his glory; and those (with his disciples) who saw this, believed in him. | John 2:11
After this Jesus descended to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and the disciples, and they stayed there for only a few days. | John 2:12
The Passover
When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went to up Jerusalem. | John 2:13
Now while he was at the Passover festival, many believed in him because they saw the miraculous signs that he was doing. | John 2:23
But Jesus would not trust himself to them, because he knew them | John 2:24
and needed no one to testify about anyone, for he himself knew what was in their hearts. | John 2:26
