Chapter 26

Jesus Foretells His Death

Verse 1: Again he said to them, “Soon I am leaving, and you will come searching for me, but you shall die in your sins. Where I am going, you cannot come.” | John 8:21

Then his opponents began to say, “Perhaps he going to kill himself? Can this be what he means by saying to us, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” | John 8:22

He said to them, “You are from below, You cannot comprehend where I am from; you are of this world, I am not of this world. | John 8:23

Therefore I said to you, that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe in me and my word, you will die in your sins.” | John 8:24

They questioned him, “Who are you?” Jesus answered, “How is it that I am speaking to you at all? | John 8:25

I could say many things about you and many things to condemn, but know this, the one who sent me is true, and I announce to the world what I have heard from him.” | John 8:26

They could not perceive that he was telling them about the true Father. | John 8:27

So Jesus said, “It will be too late when you will realize who I am and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak to you, the things the Father has taught me to say. | John 8:28

And the one who sent me is always with me; and I am with him, I am never alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him. | John 8:29

If people ask you, 'Where did you come from?', reply to them, 'We came from the light, the place where the light came into existence on its own accord, then established itself and revealed itself in their image.' | Gospel of Thomas 50

If they say to you, 'Is it you?', say, 'We are its children, we are the elect of the living Father.' | Gospel of Thomas 50

If people ask you, 'What is the sign of your father in you?', reply to them, 'It is movement and repose.' | Gospel of Thomas 50

While he was saying these things, many people in the crowd believed in him. | John 8:30

True Disciples

Then Jesus said to those who believed in him, “If you apply my word into practice, you are truly my disciples, | John 8:31

and you will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” | John 8:32

Then they answered him, “We are descendants of our father Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be made free’?” | John 8:33

Jesus answered them, “In truth, I tell you, those who commit sin is a slave to sin. | John 8:34

The slave does not have a place in the household, but a son has a place there forever. | John 8:35

Therefore, if you do the will of the Son and he makes you free, you will be free indeed. | John 8:36

You are indeed Abraham’s descendants, yet you look for an opportunity to kill me because my word has no place in your lives. | John 8:37

I speak of what I have seen with my Father; as for you, in the same way, you should do what you have heard from your Father.” | John 8:38

Jesus and Abraham

They answered him again, “Abraham is our father.” and Jesus replied, “If you really were Abraham’s children, you would have done what Abraham did, | John 8:39

but now you seek to kill me, someone who has told you the truth that they heard from their Father. Abraham didn’t do this. | John 8:40

You are doing the works of your father.” They told him, “We are not illegitimate children. For we have one Father, God himself.” | John 8:41

Jesus then said to them, “If you had acted as Abraham did, you would love me, for I came from my Father, and now I am here. I have not come on my own accord, but my Father who sent me. | John 8:42

How is it that you do not understand what I say? It is because you cannot hear and accept my word. | John 8:43

You are the children of your father, the devil of this world and you choose to do his desires. He was a murderer from the very beginning and does not stand within truth because no truth exists in him. When he lies, he speaks in accordance to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of all lies. | John 8:44

But because I speak the truth, you will not believe me. | John 8:45

Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin? If I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? | John 8:46

Whoever hears my Father's words and do his works, is from him. You hear them not because you hear your father's words and do his works.” | John 8:47

Then his opponents answered and said to him, “Are we not right to say that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?” | John 8:48

Jesus answered them, “I am not possessed by a demon, but I do honor my Father, and you dishonor us both. | John 8:49

But I do not seek my own glory or praise; there is only one who has them, and he is the judge. | John 8:50

In truth I say to you, whoever keeps my word shall never see death.” | John 8:51

And his opponents said to him with certainty, “Now we know that you are possessed by a demon. For Abraham died, and so did all the prophets, yet you tell us, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’ | John 8:52

Are you even greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did prophets also. Who do you claim to be?” | John 8:53

Jesus answered them, “If I glorify myself, my glory is not worth anything. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you claim, ‘He is our God,’ | John 8:54

And you have not known him. But I know him; if I said that I do not know him then I would be a liar just like you all. But I do know him, and I obey and keep his word. | John 8:55

“In truth I say to you,” replied Jesus, “before Adam existed I was.” | John 8:58

Then they started picking up stones to throw at him, but Jesus then hid himself and left the temple courts. | John 8:59
