Chapter 33

Jesus the Resurrection and the Life

Verse 1: When Jesus arrived, he heard that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb. | John 11:17

2 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away, | John 11:18

3 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in the loss of their brother. | John 11:19

4 So when Martha learned that Jesus was coming, she left to meet Him; but Mary stayed at home. | John 11:20

5 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, then my brother would not have died. | John 11:21

6 But even now I know that God shall grant you whatever you ask of him.” | John 11:22

7 “Your brother shall rise again.” Jesus told her. | John 11:23

8 Martha replied, “I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” | John 11:24

9 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die. | John 11:25

10 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Martha, do you believe this?” | John 11:26

11 She answered, “Yes, Lord, I truly believe that you are the Messiah.” | John 11:27

Jesus Weeps

12 When she had said this, she returned home and took her sister aside and said privately, “The Teacher is here and he is calling for you.” | John 11:28

13 And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to meet him. | John 11:29

14 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village but was still in the place where Martha had met with him before. | John 11:30

15 When those who had come to mourn were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to mourn there. | John 11:31

16 When Mary came to Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, weeping and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” | John 11:32

17 When Jesus saw her and those who followed her weeping, he was deeply moved and distressed. | John 11:33

18 “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Lord, come and see.” they answered. | John 11:34

19 And Jesus started to weep. | John 11:35

20 Then those standing there were saying to each other, “See how he loved him!” | John 11:36

21 But some of them said, “Could this man who gave sight to the blind man have prevented this man from dying?” | John 11:37

Jesus Raises Lazarus to Life

22 Then Jesus, again deeply moved, arrived at the tomb. It was a small cave, and a stone was lying across the entrance. | John 11:38

23 Jesus said, “Move away the stone away.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, he has been dead four days already, by now there must be a stench.” | John 11:39

24 Jesus told her, “Did I not say to you that if you did believe, you would see the glory of my Father?” | John 11:40

25 So they rolled away the stone. And Jesus then lifted his head and eyes upward towards the sky and said, “Father, I thank you for having hear me. | John 11:41

26 I knew that you always do, but I have said this for the benefit of the people standing with me here, so that they may believe that you have sent me.” | John 11:42

27 As soon as he said this, he called out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” | John 11:43

28 The dead man came out, his limbs wrapped in burial cloths and a veil over his face. Jesus said to them, “Untie him, and let him go.” | John 11:44

The Plot to Kill Jesus 1

29 Many who had come with Mary and had seen the works of Jesus, did believe in him. | John 11:45

30 But some of them, thinking he was demon possessed and afraid fled to the Pharisees and anxiously told them what Jesus had done. | John 11:46

31 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a meeting at the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do with him? This man is performing many miraculous signs. | John 11:47

32 If we let him continue on like this, everyone will believe in him, calling him 'the son of god', and the Romans will come and remove both our temple and our nation.” | John 11:48

33 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was the high priest appointed by the Roman authority, said to all of them, “You know nothing at all! | John 11:49

34 Have you not considered? That it is more profitable for one man to die for the people than the whole nation destroyed?” | John 11:50

35 And from that day onward they planned and schemed together to put him to death. | John 11:53

36 As a consequence, Jesus no longer went publicly among the Jewish people but he went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness, to stay there with the disciples. | John 11:54

37 But the Jewish Festival of the Passover was near, and many people came from the surrounding country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. | John 11:55

38 They kept searching for Jesus and were asking each another as they started to assemble into the temple courts, “What do you think? Perhaps he will not come to the festival?” | John 11:56

39 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had already issued orders that if anyone who knew where Jesus was, they should report it so that they might arrest him. | John 11:57

Jesus Cleanses Ten Men with a Skin Disease

40 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus was passing through the regions between Samaria and Galilee. | Luke 17:11

41 He saw a Samaritan carrying a lamb as he went to Judaea. He said to his disciples, “Why does that man carry the lamb around?” | Gospel of Thomas 60

42 They said to him, “So that he may slaughter it and eat it?”, and he said to them, “He will not eat it as long as it is still alive, but only if he kills it and it becomes a corpse.” | Gospel of Thomas 60

43 Then they said to him, “He cannot do so otherwise.”, and Jesus replied, “You too, seek a place for yourself within the repose, so that you do not become corpses and are eaten.” | Gospel of Thomas 60

44 As he entered into a village, some ten men with a skin disease approached him. They stood at a distance, | Luke 17:12

45 they raised their voices calling out to Jesus, saying, “Master, have mercy on us!” | Luke 17:13

46 When he saw them and having compassion, he said to them, “Goto the temple and make yourselves known to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. | Luke 17:14

47 And one of them, upon seeing that he was healed, turned back, began praising God with a loud voice. | Luke 17:15

48 He fell down on his face at Jesus’s feet and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. | Luke 17:16

49 Then Jesus asked him, “Were not all ten made well? Then where are the other nine? | Luke 17:17

50 Did none of them come back to give thanks except this foreigner?” | Luke 17:18

51 Then he said to the man, “Get up and be on your way. For your faith has made you well.” | Luke 17:19
