Chapter 8

About Salt

Verse 1: “You are the salt of the earth, Salt is good, but if salt has lost its flavor, how can it be restored? | Matthew 5:13, Luke 14:34

It is not fit for neither the soil nor the manure pile but is thrown out and trampled under foot. | Luke 14:35, Matthew 5:13

For everyone who listens to me, shall be salted with fire. | Mark 9:49

Have salt in yourself, and live at peace with one another. | Mark 9:50

If you have ears to hear, then hear!” | Luke 14:35

The Light of the Body

“You are the light of the world. A town set on a hill cannot be hidden. | Matthew 5:14

No one lights a lamp and then puts it in a cellar or under a bushel basket; instead they put it on the lampstand so that all those who enter may see the light in the house. | Matthew 5:15, Luke 11:33

Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is good, your whole body is full of light, but if it is wicked, your body is full of darkness. | Luke 11:34

If, therefore, the light that is in you is darkness, how great the depths of that darkness is! | Matthew 6:23

But if your whole body is bursting with light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be radiant, as when the lamp with its light gives light to you. | Luke 11:36

In exactly the same way, let your light shine brightly before others, so that they may be inspired by your good works and glorify my Father who is in heaven. | Matthew 5:16

The Law and the Prophets

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not for them but for you.” | Matthew 5:17

His disciples said to him, “Twenty-four prophets spoke in Israel, and all of them spoke concerning you.” | Gospel of Thomas 52

Jesus said to them, “You have ignored the one living in your presence and have spoken only of the dead. | Gospel of Thomas 52

For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth passes away, not one letter, not one jot or stroke of a letter, not one detail, will pass away from the law until all is accomplished. | Matthew 5:18

Therefore, whoever breaks my commandments and teaches others to do the same will not receive eternal life, but whoever does my will shall enter the kingdom of heaven.” | Matthew 5:19

His disciples said to him, “Is circumcision beneficial or not?” He said to them, “If it were beneficial, their Father would beget them already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become very profitable. | Gospel of Thomas 53

For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the scribes and Pharisees (for the law), you will never enter the kingdom of my Father.” | Matthew 5:20

Concerning Anger

“You have heard that it was said to Moses, ‘You shall not kill,’ and ‘whoever kills shall be subject to judgment.’ | Matthew 5:21

But I say to you that anyone who is angry with another person, you will be subject to judgment, and whoever insults anyone, you will be brought to the temple, and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be subject to the fires of hell. | Matthew 5:22

So when you are about to show love to me, if you remember that your neighbour has something against you, | Matthew 5:23

go; first be reconciled with them, for in loving them, you love me. | Matthew 5:24

Reconcile quickly with your accuser, even when you meet them on your way to the court, otherwise your accuser may deliver you over to the judge and the judge to the guard, and you then will be thrown into prison. | Matthew 5:25

Believe me, you will never be released until you have paid the very last penny.” | Matthew 5:26

Concerning Adultery

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You will not commit adultery.’ | Matthew 5:27

But I say to you that anyone who looks at someone with lustful desires has already committed adultery in their heart. | Matthew 5:28

If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and discard it; it is better for you to lose a part of you than for your whole body to be cast into the darkness. | Matthew 5:29

And if your right hand causes you to sin, also cut it off and discard it; it is better for you to lose a part of you than the whole body to be cast into darkness as well.” | Matthew 5:30

Teaching about Divorce

Some Pharisees came to him, and started to test him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for whatever reason he chooses?” | Matthew 19:3

Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from beginning your father ‘made them male and female,’ | Matthew 19:4

and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? | Matthew 19:5

So that they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what your Father has joined together, no one can separate.” | Matthew 19:6

Turning to the crowd Jesus said, “When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, | Gospel of Thomas 22

and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one into a single one, | Gospel of Thomas 22

so that the male not be male nor the female female... then will you enter the kingdom of heaven.” | Gospel of Thomas 22

A Pharisee then said to him, “Why then did Moses order us to give a certificate in order for a man to divorce his wife?” | Matthew 19:7

Jesus said to them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hard hearts, but from the beginning it was not so. | Matthew 19:8

And I say to you, that whosoever divorces, except for sexual immorality, and then marries another commits adultery, and they who marries a divorced person then commits adultery. | Matthew 19:9

Anyone who divorces and remarries another commits adultery, and whoever marries someone divorced also commits adultery.” | Luke 16:18

The disciples said to him, “If such is the case between man and a woman, then all the better to not marry.” | Matthew 19:10

But he said to them, “It is unfortunate that not everyone can accept this teaching. | Matthew 19:11

Whether one is an eunuch from birth, or made one by others or who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this, let them do so.” | Matthew 19:12

Simon Peter said, “Let Mary leave us, for women are not worthy of life.” | Gospel of Thomas 114

Jesus answered, “Look, I will lead her so that I may make her male, allowing her to also become a living spirit resembling you males. For every woman who makes herself male will enter into my Father's kingdom.” | Gospel of Thomas 114
