Chapter 12
Some Women Accompany Jesus
Verse 1: Soon afterwards, he went on through towns and villages one after another, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of his Father. With him went the Twelve, | Luke 8:1
2 Mary, called Magdalene, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, whose boy was healed, Salome, the wife of Simon the Pharisee and Susanna, whose husband was risen in Nain, and many others, who provided for Jesus and his ministry out of their own resources. | Luke 8:3
3 For Jesus had proclaimed. “Come to me, all you who are worn out and are struggling under a heavy burden, and I will give you rest. | Matthew 11:28
4 Walk with me, and let me teach you, for I am gentle and humble in heart, your souls will finally find rest. | Matthew 11:29
5 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden is light indeed.” | Matthew 11:30
Jesus and Beelzebul
6 Then some people brought to him a man who was blind and mute because he was demon-possessed, and Jesus healed him and immediately the man could speak and see. | Matthew 12:22
7 All the crowds were astounded and began saying, “Perhaps this be the Son of David?” | Matthew 12:23
8 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man casts out the demons by the authority of Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” | Matthew 12:24
9 He knew, knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom at war against itself is headed for destruction, and no city or house divided by conflict against itself will not stand. | Matthew 12:25
10 And if as you say Satan casts out Satan, he has turned against himself; how then, is his kingdom supposed stand? | Matthew 12:26
11 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by which authority does the temple cast them out? Therefore they cannot be my judges. | Matthew 12:27
12 It is by the will of my Father and his authority that I cast out demons, his kingdom has come upon you but you do not see it. | Matthew 12:28
13 Or how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. | Matthew 12:29
14 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his property and possessions are safe. | Luke 11:21
15 But when a stronger man than he attacks and conquers him, he takes away both his armor and weapons that he relied upon and then divides his plunder. | Luke 11:22
16 Whosoever is not with me is in opposition to me, and whosoever that does not gather with me scatters. | Matthew 12:30
17 For this reason I say to you, people shall be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against my works will never be forgiven. | Matthew 12:31
18 Whosoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But whoever slanders or blasphemes against my works can never have forgiveness and is guilty of an eternal sin. | Matthew 12:32, Mark 3:29
A Tree and Its Fruit (cont.)
19 “Either make the tree good and it produces good fruit, or make the tree bad and it produces bad fruit, for each tree is known by its fruit. | Matthew 12:33
20 You brood of vipers! How can you, evil as you are, speak of good things? For out of the treasure of the heart the mouth speaks. | Matthew 12:34
21 A good person filled with light brings good things from their wealth of treasure, and an evil person filled with darkness brings out evil things from their wicked treasure. | Matthew 12:35
22 For I say to you, on the day of judgment you will be held accountable for every action, | Matthew 12:36
23 for by your actions you will be justified, and by your actions you will be condemned.” | Matthew 12:37
24 His disciples said to him, “Who are you to say these things to us?” | Gospel of Thomas 43
25 You do not realize who I am from what I say to you, but you have become like the chief priests, for they either love the tree and hate its fruit or love the fruit and hate the tree. | Gospel of Thomas 43
26 At that time some of those present told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices in the temple. | Luke 13:1
27 And answering said to them, “Do you think these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because in the way that they suffered? | Luke 13:2
28 No, I say to you, but unless you change your ways you will all perish as they did.” | Luke 13:3
29 Or those soldiers who were killed at the temple, do you think that their offenses were greater than all the other soldiers? | Luke 13:4
30 No, I say to you, but unless you change your ways, you will all perish just as they did.” | Luke 13:5
The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
31 Then he told them this parable: “A certain man had planted a fig tree in his vineyard, and after some time he came looking for fruit on it and found none. | Luke 13:6
32 So he told his gardener, ‘Look! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and haven't yet found any. Cut it down! Why does it waste the soil?’ | Luke 13:7
33 But the gardener pleaded, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, for I shall dig around and fertilize it. | Luke 13:8
34 Then, if it bears in future, well and good; but if not, you can have it cut down.’” | Luke 13:9
Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman
35 Later on the Sabbath, he was in one of the synagogues teaching. | Luke 13:10
36 And looking into the crowd, he saw before him a woman who for eighteen years had been crippled by an evil spirit. She was bent over and was unable to straighten herself up completely. | Luke 13:11
37 When Jesus saw her, he beckoned her to him and said, “Woman, you are released from your disability.” | Luke 13:12
38 When he placed his hands on her, at once she stood up upright and began praising God. | Luke 13:13
39 But the leader of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, furiously speaking at the crowd, “There are six days for which labour is mandated! So come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath.” | Luke 13:14
40 But the Lord rebuked him and said, “You hypocrites! Every one of you on the Sabbath unties his ox or his donkey from the manger and leads it to water. Why is this woman any different? | Luke 13:15
41 And shouldn't this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom the devil of this world bound for eighteen long years, be released from her bondage on the Sabbath day?” | Luke 13:16
42 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated and felt ashamed, and the entire crowd rejoiced at all the wonderful things he was doing. | Luke 13:17
