Chapter 13

The Sign of the Beginning

Verse 1: Then a small group of scribes and Pharisees approached him and said, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” | Matthew 12:38

But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation desires a sign, but none shall be given to them except the sign of the beginning. | Matthew 12:39,

Have you discovered, then, the beginning so that you look for the end? For where the beginning is, there will the end be. | Gospel of Thomas 18

When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that it is you who are the children of the living Father. | Gospel of Thomas 3

But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty and it is you who are that poverty. | Gospel of Thomas 3

The Queen of the South came from the very ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, what you're looking for has already come, but you don't know it. | Matthew 12:42, Gospel of Thomas 51

The pharisees and the scribes have taken the keys of knowledge and hidden them. Neither have they entered nor have they permitted those people who wish to.” | Gospel of Thomas 39

The Return of the Unclean Spirit

“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through places where there is no water in search of rest, and does not find it. | Matthew 12:43

Then it says, ‘I shall return to my house that I left.’ On its return, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order. | Matthew 12:44

Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there, so the person is worse at the end than the beginning. So will it be with this evil generation also. | Matthew 12:45

To what then, shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? | Luke 7:31

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other, ‘We played the flute for you, but you have not danced; we wailed and mourned, but you have not wept.’ | Luke 7:32

For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He is possessed by a demon’; | Luke 7:33

the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors, sinners and outcasts!’ | Luke 7:34

Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated and justified by all her children.” | Luke 7:35

The True Kindred of Jesus

As he was still speaking to the large crowds of people, his mother and his brothers were waiting outside, desiring to speak to him. | Matthew 12:46

Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” | Matthew 12:47

And Jesus answered, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” | Matthew 12:48

And stretching out to point towards his disciples, he said, “Look! Here are my mother and my brothers! | Matthew 12:49

For whoever shall do the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, my sister and my mother.” | Matthew 12:50

The Parable of the Sower

That same day Jesus had left the house and went to sit beside the sea. | Matthew 13:1

And large crowds gathered so close to him that he entered a small boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the shore. | Matthew 13:2

And he spoke to them many things in parables, and then said: “Listen! A certain farmer went out to sow. | Matthew 13:3

And as he sows, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them. | Matthew 13:4

Other seeds fell upon on rocky ground where they did not have much soil. They sprang up quickly because the soil did not have much depth. | Matthew 13:5

But when the sun had risen, they were scorched by the heat, and because they had no root, they withered away. | Matthew 13:6

Other seeds fell upon among some thorns, and the thorns grew up and strangled the seedlings. | Matthew 13:7

Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth good fruit, some a hundred times as much, some sixty, some thirty. | Matthew 13:8

If you have ears, let them hear!” | Matthew 13:9

The Parable of the Growing Seed

And he said, “The kingdom of my Father is like someone who would scatter seed on the ground | Mark 4:26

and then should sleep and rise night and day, while the seed would sprout and grow, how, he does not know. | Mark 4:27

All by itself the earth produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head and finally the full grain in the head. | Mark 4:28

And when the fruit is ripe, immediately the farmer reaps with his sickle because the harvest has come.” | Mark 4:29

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

He spoke to them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field; | Matthew 13:31

it is the smallest of all the seeds, but it grows into the greatest of garden plants and then becomes a tree, so that wild birds come and nest in its branches.” | Matthew 13:32

The Parable of the Yeast

He spoke to them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like some yeast that a woman mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until all the dough had risen.” | Matthew 13:33

The Parable of the Big Fish

He spoke to them another parable: “A man who follows my father's will is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of little fish. | Gospel of Thomas 8

Among them he found a fine large fish. He discarded all the little fish back into the sea and chose the large fish without difficulty. | Gospel of Thomas 8

Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” | Gospel of Thomas 8

Three Parables

And he said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a field that a man discovered, and in his joy he went and sold all that he had and bought that field. He then worked it diligently, and it yielded an abundant harvest, so great that he had more than enough to give generously to the poor.” | Matthew 13:44

“Once more, the kingdom of heaven is like a wise merchant searching for fine pearls. | Matthew 13:45

When he found a pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it. Wishing to share his joy with everyone, he leased it to the Temple for exhibition and with the income he received year after year he cared for the poor.” | Matthew 13:46

“In the same way, the kingdom of heaven is like a large net, that was cast into the sea and caught all kinds of fish, | Matthew 13:47

which, when it was full, they drew it to shore, sat down, and put the good fish into baskets but discarded the bad. | Matthew 13:48

So it shall be at the end of the age. The wicked will be separated from the righteous | Matthew 13:49

and thrown into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth in the darkness”. | Matthew 13:50

Mary said to Jesus, “Whom are your disciples like?” | Gospel of Thomas 21

He said, "They are like little children who have settled in a field which is not theirs. When the owners of the field come, they will say, 'Give our field back to us.' | Gospel of Thomas 21

They, for their part, will strip naked in their presence in order to give it back to them, and they give them their land. Therefore I say to you, if the owner of a house knows that the thief is coming, | Gospel of Thomas 21

he will keep watch before he comes and will not let the thief break into his house of the estate to carry off his things. You, then, keep watch against the world. | Gospel of Thomas 21

Arm yourselves with great strength so that the robbers won't find a way to come to you, for the trouble that you expect will come. May there be among you a man of understanding. | Gospel of Thomas 21

When the grain ripened, he came quickly with his sickle in his hand and reaped it. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” | Gospel of Thomas 21
