Chapter 21

Jesus Cures a Blind Man at Bethsaida

Verse 1: When they arrived at Bethsaida, a group of people brought a blind man to him and begged Jesus to touch him. | Mark 8:22

2 He took hold of the blind man by the hand and brought him to the outskirts of the village, and placed his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” | Mark 8:23

3 And the man looked around and said, “I see people, but they look to me like trees walking around.” | Mark 8:24

4 Jesus asked, did you come of your own volition or were you brought? The man looked confused, unsure of how to answer and then said “I came because I believe in you”

5 and then Jesus placed his hands on him again, as the man opened his eyes again his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly. | Mark 8:25

6 And he sent him away to his home, saying, “Go, your faith has made you well. But do not even go or tell anyone into the village.” | Mark 8:26

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus

7 Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” | Matthew 16:13, Luke 9:18

8 And they answered, “Some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah; and many others Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” | Matthew 16:14

9 He said to them, “But what about you? Who do you say that I am?” | Matthew 16:15

10 Simon Peter said to him, “You are like a righteous angel.” Matthew said to him, “You are like a wise philosopher.” | Gospel of Thomas 13

11 Thomas said to him, “Master, my mouth is wholly incapable of saying whom you are like.” | Gospel of Thomas 13

12 Jesus replied, “Because it has been said that you are my twin and true friend, study yourself and discover who you are, the mode in which you are, and how you will be in the future.

13 Because you will be called 'my brother,' it is not appropriate for you to be self-ignorant... you have already achieved some knowledge, and soon you will be called 'the one of self-knowledge.'

14 This is because whoever has no self-knowledge is a know-nothing, but whoever has self-knowledge has together with it already obtained deep knowledge about everything.

15 Consequently, my brother Thomas, you have gazed on what is obscure to humans, namely, what they in self-ignorance stumble over.”

16 He said to the others, “Pay attention to the living one while you are alive, for if you die and then seek see him, you will be unable to do so.” | Gospel of Thomas 59

17 Then he urged his disciples not to disclose to anyone who he was. | Matthew 16:20

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

18 From that time, Jesus began to tell his disciples that he must travel to Jerusalem and undergo a great suffering at the hands of the temple elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed for be broke their laws. | Matthew 16:21

19 And then Peter took him to one side and began to rebuke him, telling him, “I forbid it, Lord! This will never happen to you.” | Matthew 16:22

20 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, devil of this world! You are a hindrance to me, for your mind is set on human things and not the divine.” | Matthew 16:23

The Cross and Self-Denial

21 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any wish to follow me, let them renounce themself, take up their cross and do my will and follow me. | Matthew 16:24

22 For whosoever wants to save their life shall lose it, and whosoever loses their life for my sake will find it. | Matthew 16:25

23 For what does profit a person to gain the entire world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in exchange for their life? | Matthew 16:26

24 The heavens and the earth will come to an end in your presence. And anyone who lives within the Living One will not see death. Whoever finds themselves is superior to the world?” | Gospel of Thomas 111

The Transfiguration

25 Now about eight days after speaking these words. Jesus took with him Peter, John and James and ascended up on the mountain to pray. | Luke 9:28

26 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became as white and radiant as the heavens. | Luke 9:29

27 Now Peter and his companions were overpowered by sleep, but as they became fully awoke they saw his glory. | Luke 9:32

28 But Jesus came over and touched them, and said, “Rise up and do not be afraid.” | Matthew 17:7

29 As they were coming down the mountain side, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Say to no one about the vision, until it is time to.” | Matthew 17:9

30 His disciples said to him, “When will the dead come to rest, and when will the new world come?” | Gospel of Thomas 51

31 He said to them, “What you're looking for has already come, but you don't know it.” | Gospel of Thomas 51

The Healing of a Boy with a Spirit

32 When they returned to rejoin the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. | Mark 9:14

33 When the whole crowd saw Jesus, they were amazed, and they ran toward him to greet him. | Mark 9:15

34 Then he asked the scribes, “What are you arguing about with them?” and they were silent. | Mark 9:16

35 Someone from the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son; who is possessed by a spirit that makes him mute, | Mark 9:17

36 and whenever it seizes him, it throws him down to the ground, and he foams and gnashes his teeth and becomes paralyzed. I asked your disciples to cast the spirit out, but they could not do so.” | Mark 9:18

37 “You faithless and unbelieving generation”, exclaimed Jesus, “How long will I be with you? How much longer must I endure you? Bring the boy to me.” | Mark 9:19

38 And they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately shrieked and threw the boy into convulsions, and the boy fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. | Mark 9:20

39 Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has he been like this?” And he said, “From childhood. | Mark 9:21

40 It has often thrown him into fire and into the water, to end his life. But if you can do anything, have compassion and help us!” | Mark 9:22

41 Jesus said to him, “If you can? Everything is possible for the one who believes in me.” | Mark 9:23

42 Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” | Mark 9:24

43 When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, telling it, “You spirit tormenting this boy, I command you, leave him immediately, and never enter him again!” | Mark 9:25

44 After crying out and convulsing him greatly, it came out of him. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.” | Mark 9:26

45 But Jesus gently took him by the hand and raised him up, and he stood up. | Mark 9:27

46 When Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples followed him and then asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” | Mark 9:28

47 He said to them, “Because of your misdirected faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith in me the size of a mustard seed, you shall say to a mountain, ‘Go! Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing shall ever be impossible for you.” | Matthew 17:20
