Chapter 23

A Samaritan Village Refuses to Receive Jesus

Verse 1: In the next few days Jesus decided to travel to Jerusalem. | Luke 9:51

2 And he sent word ahead of him. They messengers went and entered a village of the Samaritans to to make arrangements for him, | Luke 9:52

3 but they refused to welcome him because his destination was Jerusalem. | Luke 9:53

4 When his disciples James and John had seen this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire to come down from heaven and destroy them, just as Elijah did?” | Luke 9:54

5 But he turned and rebuked them, saying “you do not know whose spirit is in you. | Luke 9:55

6 For the Son of Man didn't come to destroy, but to save.” Then they made their way to another village. | Luke 9:56

Would-Be Followers of Jesus

7 And as they were traveling on the road, someone approached Jesus and said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” | Luke 9:57

8 And Jesus replied, “Foxes have their dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has place to lay his head.” | Luke 9:58

9 To another Jesus said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first allow let me go and bury my father.” | Luke 9:59

10 And Jesus said to him, “Then bury your own dead, but once you do, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” | Luke 9:60

11 Still another also said, “I shall follow you, Lord, but allow me bid farewell to those at my home.” | Luke 9:61

12 And Jesus told him, “No one who puts their hand to the plow and keeps looking back is fit for the kingdom of my Father.” | Luke 9:62

Temptations to Sin

13 “If anyone causes these little ones who believe in me to stumble and sin, it would be better for them if a great millstone were hung around their neck and were thrown in the open sea and drowned. | Matthew 18:6

14 Woe to the world because of the many temptations that cause one to sin! Alas is the way of this wicked world, but woe to the person through whom they come! | Matthew 18:7

15 If your hand or your foot is causing you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is much better for you to enter eternal life crippled or maimed than to have both hands or both feet and to be cast out into darkness. | Matthew 18:8

16 And if your eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is much better for you to enter eternal life with one eye than having two eyes and to be cast out into darkness, | Matthew 18:9

17 where the devil of this world's wrath never dies and his fire is never quenched.” | Mark 9:48

Another Exorcist

18 John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him from doing so because he was not following us.” | Mark 9:38

19 But Jesus said, “Do not prevent him, for no one who uses my name to do good works will be able to speak evil of me. | Mark 9:39

20 For whosoever is not against us is on our side. | Mark 9:40

21 I tell you, whoever gives a cup of water to drink in my name will by no means lose their reward.” | Mark 9:41

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

22 Jesus told them another parable, “Beware that you do not trouble or have disdain to any of these little ones. For I tell you, my Father in heaven know what is in their hearts. | Matthew 18:10

23 For the Son of Man descended and came to seek and to save the lost. | Luke 19:10

24 What do you think? If a someone has a hundred sheep and one of them astrays, will he not leave the ninety nine on the hills and mountains and to go search for the one that wandered away? | Matthew 18:12

25 And if they succeed in finding it, In truth I say to you, they will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. | Matthew 18:13

26 Most certainly, I say to you. It is the will of my Father in heaven that not one of these little ones should be lost and then perish.” | Matthew 18:14

Reproving Another Who Sins

27 Jesus continued, “If your neighbour acts wrongly against you, go and point out the fault with them in private. If you are listened to, you have won them over. | Matthew 18:15

28 But if they do not listen, take one or two others with you, so that their testimony may not be disputed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. | Matthew 18:16

29 And If that person refuses to listen to them, speak to the church, and if they refuse to even listen to the church, then treat them as a gentile or a tax collector. | Matthew 18:17

30 In truth I say to you, whatsoever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatsoever you release on earth will be released in heaven. | Matthew 18:18

31 Again, truly I say to you. That if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it shall be done for them by my Father who is in heaven. | Matthew 18:19

32 For where there are three or more, they are gods of the world. But where there is one alone, I am with them.” | Gospel of Thomas 30

Occasions for Sin

33 Jesus said to his disciples, “It is inevitable for the world to cause someone to sin, but woe to the person through whom they come! | Luke 17:1

34 I say to you once more, it would be better for one if a millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea than to be the reason for one of these little ones to commit sin. | Luke 17:2

35 Be on your guard! If a brother or sister does wrong against you, you must rebuke the offender, and if they change their ways and ask forgiveness, then you must forgive. | Luke 17:3

36 And should a person sin against you seven times a day and then turns around to you seven times and says, ‘I am sorry,’ then you must forgive.” | Luke 17:4

37 And the apostles pleaded to the Lord, “Give us more faith!” | Luke 17:5

38 And the Lord replied, “Truly I say to you. If you have the faith then any works is possible. | Luke 17:6

39 And which of you would say to your servant who comes in from plowing or shepherding in the field and will say to him, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table to eat’? | Luke 17:7

40 and will you rather not say to him, ‘Prepare something that I may eat; make yourself ready and serve me while I eat and drink and after I have finished then later you shall eat and drink’? | Luke 17:8

41 Do you thank the servant for doing what was he was told? | Luke 17:9

42 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded to do so, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have done our duty!’” | Luke 17:10

43 The disciples said to Jesus, “Tell us how our end will be.” | Gospel of Thomas 18

44 Jesus said, “Have you discovered, then, the beginning so that you look for the end? For where the beginning is, there will the end be. | Gospel of Thomas 18

45 Blessed is the person who will take their place in the beginning; they will know the end and will not experience death.” | Gospel of Thomas 18
