Chapter 28

Jesus the Good Shepherd

Verse 1: “In truth I say to you, anyone who does not enter the sheep-pen through the door but climbs up some other way is a thief and a robber. | John 10:1

But the one who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep. | John 10:2

The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen only to his voice. He calls to his own sheep by name and leads them out. | John 10:3

When he has brought them all out, he walks in front of them, and his sheep follow him, because they know his voice. | John 10:4

They shall not follow a stranger, but instead will run away from him; because they do not know a stranger’s voice.” | John 10:5

This was the allegory that Jesus told them, but they did not understand at all what he was telling them. | John 10:6

So Jesus said again, “In truth I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. | John 10:7

All those who came before me are thieves and robbers, the sheep who listened to them perished. | John 10:8

I am the door; he who goes in through me will be saved, and he will go in and out and find pasture. | John 10:9

The thief comes only to steal, to kill and destroy. I was sent so they may have life and may have it abundantly. | John 10:10

“I am the good shepherd. A good sheep will trust and follow the same path as the good shepherd. | John 10:11

The hired servant, not being a shepherd and does not own the sheep, upon seeing the wolf coming, will abandon the sheep and run away, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. | John 10:12

The hired hand runs away because they are not concerned about the sheep, only for their wages. | John 10:13

I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep and they know me, | John 10:14

just as my Father knows me, and I know him. And I will lay down my life for the sheep, so they find eternal life. | John 10:15

I have many other sheep that do not belong to this fold. They listen to my voice and in doing so they will be as one flock, and I will be their shepherd. | John 10:16

For this reason my Father loves me, because I will lay down my life so that they will follow me and attain eternal life. | John 10:17

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down voluntarily. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it up again. This is the command which I received from my Father. | John 10:18

Blessed is the lion which becomes man when consumed by man; and cursed is the man whom the lion consumes, and the lion becomes man. | Gospel of Thomas 7

Again there was a division among the dwellers of the temple because of these words. | John 10:19

And many of them were saying, “He is demon possessed and is completely mad. Why does anyone listen to him?” | John 10:20

Others were saying, “These cannot be the words of someone demon possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” | John 10:21

The Mission of the Seventy-Two

After all these things, the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them on ahead of him in two by two to every town, village and place where he himself was intending to visit. | Luke 10:1

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few indeed; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to bring forth more workers into his harvest. | Luke 10:2

Now, go on your way. Remember, I am sending you out like innocent lambs in the midst of ravenous wolves! | Luke 10:3

Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals, and do not stop to greet anyone on your journey. | Luke 10:4

Whosoever's house you enter, first proclaim, ‘Peace to this house!’ | Luke 10:5

And should a person of peace be there, your peace shall rest on that person, but if not, your blessing will be credited as righteous to you. | Luke 10:6

Stay in the same house, eating and drinking whatsoever they give you, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not move about from house to another. | Luke 10:7

Whatever town you visit, if the people welcome you, then eat what is set before you; | Luke 10:8

heal the sick who are there, and tell the people, ‘The Father's kingdom has come near to you.’ | Luke 10:9

Proclaim to them 'Yet you are sleeping, dreaming dreams. Wake up and return, taste and eat the true food!'”, As he exclaimed, “Hand out the word and the water of life!”

But whenever you enter a town or village and they do not welcome you, go throughout its streets, become passers-by and say, | Luke 10:10, Gospel of Thomas 42

‘Even though you have not welcome us. We bless you in the name of our father and we pray you hear his words. Yet, know this: the Father's kingdom has come near.’ | Luke 10:11

For I tell you, on that day it will be more bearable for Sodom than for the people of that place, who rejected you. | Luke 10:12

Woes to Unrepentant Cities

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles and mighty works that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. | Luke 10:13

But it will be more bearable for Tyre and for Sidon in the judgment than for you! | Luke 10:14

And you, Capernaum, will you be raised to heaven and then exalted? No, you will be cast into the darkness! | Luke 10:15

Anyone who listens to you also listens to me; and anyone who rejects you also rejects me; and anyone who rejects me also rejects the one who sent me.” | Luke 10:16

The Return of the Seventy-Two

The seventy-two returned with joy in their hearts, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us through your name!” | Luke 10:17

And he said to them, “I saw the devil of this world descend from his heaven like a flash of lightning. | Luke 10:18

Indeed, I have given you authority and power to tread on snakes and scorpions and power over his world and nothing will ever harm you. | Luke 10:19

Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the demons submit to you, but rejoice that you are doing the works of my Father.” | Luke 10:20
