Chapter 29

Jesus Rejoices

Verse 1: At the same time Jesus rejoiced and cried out, “I thank you, Father, because you have hidden all these things from the wise and the intelligent and have chosen to reveal them to little children. | Luke 10:21

All things have been entrusted to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” | Luke 10:22

Then turning to all his disciples, Jesus said to them alone, “Blessed are the eyes that experience all that you see! | Luke 10:23

For I say to you that many prophets and kings desired to see and hear what you did, as they did not see them nor hear them either.” | Luke 10:24

Let those who seek continue seeking until they find. When they find, they will become troubled. When they become troubled, they will be astonished, and then they will reign over the all. | Gospel of Thomas 2

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

Later on in the temple. An expert in the law arose and approached to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” | Luke 10:25

Jesus asked him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” | Luke 10:26

And scribe answered, saying, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind and understanding and your neighbor as yourself.” | Luke 10:27

And he said to him, “You have read well. But tell me, when you have kept these words, what does the keeping look like?” | Luke 10:28

But wanting to justify himself, he questioned Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” | Luke 10:29

Jesus told him a parable, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and succumbed to the hands of robbers, who having stripped him, then beat him and fled, leaving him half dead. | Luke 10:30

Now by coincidence a priest was also going down that road, and on seeing him he passed by on the other side. | Luke 10:31

So too, when a Levite also came to the place and saw him, passed by, crossing to the other side. | Luke 10:32

But a Samaritan while traveling to where the injured man was, and when he saw him, he was greatly moved with pity and compassion. | Luke 10:33

He went to him and bandaged up his wounds, dressing him with oil and wine and then he put him on his own mule, took him to an inn, and cared for him. | Luke 10:34

The next day he took out some coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him’, he said, ‘and I will repay you whatever else you spend on him when I come back.’ | Luke 10:35

Which of these three, in your opinion, became a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” | Luke 10:36

He replied, “The one who took pity on him and showed him mercy.” Jesus smiled and said to him, “Go and do the same.” | Luke 10:37

Jesus Visits Martha and Mary

Now as they travelled along, Jesus came to a certain village in Bethany where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest to her house. | Luke 10:38

Her sister was Mary, who would later anoint the Lord with ointment and wipe his feet with her hair. She sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teachings. | Luke 10:39, John 11:2

But Martha was busy and distracted in waiting at the table, so she came to him flustered and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.” | Luke 10:40

So the Lord answered her and said, “Martha, Martha, you are too anxious and troubled by many things, | Luke 10:41

but only few things are necessary, really only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which shall not be taken away from her.” | Luke 10:42

True Blessedness

As Jesus left Martha's house. A woman in the crowd following him raised her voice loudly and said to him, “Blessed and precious is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!” | Luke 11:27

But he replied, “Blessed rather are those who listen to the word of my Father and follow it!” | Luke 11:28

Jesus saw some infants being nursed. He said to his disciples, “These infants nursing are like those who enter my father's kingdom.” | Gospel of Thomas 22

They said to him, “If we then become children, shall we enter the kingdom?” | Gospel of Thomas 22

Jesus said to them, “When you fashion eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness; then shall you enter the kingdom.” | Gospel of Thomas 22

Jesus Denounces Pharisees and Experts in the Law

A while later, a Pharisee invited him to have a meal with him, so he entered and took his place at the table. | Luke 11:37

The Pharisee was astonished to see that Jesus did not first wash before dinner. | Luke 11:38

But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside you are full of extortion, greed and wickedness. | Luke 11:39

You fools! Did the one who made the outside not make the inside as well? | Luke 11:40

So be as charitable giving from what is within you and then everything will be clean for you. | Luke 11:41

But woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes on the mint and rue and very kind of herb and disregard justice and words of your God; you should have done these things without neglecting the others. | Luke 11:42

Woe to you Pharisees! For you all desire to have the best seats in the synagogues and to be greeted in the marketplaces with respect. | Luke 11:43

Woe to you! Because you are like unmarked graves, and the people who walk over them do not know it!” | Luke 11:44

Also sitting at the table, an expert in the law proclaimed to him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us, as well.” | Luke 11:45

And Jesus continued, “Woe also to you experts in the law! For you weigh people down with burdens difficult to bear, and you yourselves refuse to lift a finger to lighten their load. | Luke 11:46

Woe to you! You build tombs for the prophets, but it was your ancestors who killed them. | Luke 11:47

So you testify that you approve of the deeds of your ancestors, because they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. | Luke 11:48

For this reason the wisdom of your God said, ‘I shall send them prophets and apostles, some of whom will be killed and persecuted,’ | Luke 11:49

so that this present generation may be held accountable with the blood of all the prophets shed since the beginning of the world, | Luke 11:50

from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, he who was killed between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this wicked generation. | Luke 11:51

Woe to you the experts in the law! Because you have taken away the keys of knowledge and yet you did not enter yourselves, and hindered those who were entering.” | Luke 11:52

When he left the house, the scribes and the Pharisees were already hostile to him and began to press him hard and question about many things, | Luke 11:53

plotting and lying in wait, to try and ensnare him in something he might say. | Luke 11:54
