Chapter 35
Jesus Blesses Little Children
Verse 1: Many people were bringing little children to him, so that he might lay his hands on them and pray, and the disciples rebuked those who brought them. | Mark 10:13
But when Jesus saw this, he was very displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to me and do not stop them, for the kingdom of my Father belongs to them. | Mark 10:14
In truth I say to you, whoever does not receive his kingdom as a little child shall never enter it.” | Mark 10:15
And he took the children up in his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them and then went on his way. | Mark 10:16
The Rich Man
As Jesus was resuming his journey, a certain man ran up and knelt before him and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do, so that I inherit eternal life?” | Mark 10:17
Jesus said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep my commandments. | Mark 10:18, Matthew 19:17
He asked him, “Which ones are yours?” | Matthew 19:18
Jesus replied, “You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not give false testimony. Do not defraud.’ Also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” | Mark 10:19
The man replied, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” | Matthew 19:20, Mark 10:20
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and replied, “You lack one thing. Go, sell everything you own, and give all the money to the poor, and most certainly you shall have treasure in heaven; then come and follow me.” | Mark 10:21
When the man heard this, his face fell at what Jesus was asking. He went away shocked and grieving because he had many possessions and loved them. | Mark 10:22
Then Jesus looked around and told his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who worship wealth to enter into my Father's kingdom!” | Mark 10:23
And the disciples were astonished at words he spoke. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom of my Father! | Mark 10:24
It is much easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of my Father.” | Mark 10:25
They were even more astonished and then started to discuss with one another, “Then who can be saved?” | Mark 10:26
Jesus looked at them and said, “Adam came forth from great power and great wealth, but he did not become worthy of you. If he had he been worthy, then he would not have experienced death. | Gospel of Thomas 85
Then Peter began to say to him, “Master, we have left everything to follow you. What then will we have?” | Mark 10:28
Jesus said, “In truth I say to you, there is no one who has left their home or their brothers or their sisters or their mother or their father or their children or the fields for my sake and for the sake of the good news. | Mark 10:29
And everyone who has left their houses or their brothers or their sisters or their father or their mother or their husband or their wife or their children or the fields for my name’s sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. | Matthew 19:29
But all those who are insistent on being first will be last, and those who are last will be first.” | Mark 10:31
The Laborers in the Vineyard
Jesus told them another parable: “For the kingdom of heaven is like an owner of land who left early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. | Matthew 20:1
He agreed to pay the laborers a denarius for the day and he sent them into his vineyard. | Matthew 20:2
When it was about nine o’clock in the morning, he saw some others standing idle in the marketplace, | Matthew 20:3
and he said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard as well, and I shall pay you whatever is fair.’ So they went. | Matthew 20:4
When he went out again at around midday and at three o’clock in the afternoon, he did the same as before. | Matthew 20:5
And about five o’clock in the early evening he went out and found more workers standing idle, and asked them, ‘Why are you standing here day doing nothing?’ | Matthew 20:6
They replied, ‘Because no one has hired us for work.’ He responded with, ‘Then you also go into the vineyard.’ | Matthew 20:7
Then the evening came, the master of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Assemble the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last and then ending with the first.’ | Matthew 20:8
When the workers hired around five o’clock came, each one of them received a full days pay. | Matthew 20:9
Then when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but they also received the same. | Matthew 20:10
And when they received it, they began to complain against the landowner, | Matthew 20:11
grumbling as they said, ‘These last people worked only one hour, and you have made them the same to us, who have borne the hardship of the day and the burning heat!’ | Matthew 20:12
But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree with me for a full days pay? | Matthew 20:13
Take what is yours and go! I choose to give this to the last man the same as I give to you. | Matthew 20:14
Am I not permitted to do whatever I choose with what is my own property? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ | Matthew 20:15
For whoever toils for their neighbor while it is day shall escape the darkness, whether they began at dawn or in the final hour.
But take heed: labor while the light remains. For when the sun sets and the darkness falls, the gate is shut, and no one outside may seek me.”
A Third Time Jesus Foretells His Death
As they were on the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on ahead of them; the disciples were astounded, but those who followed were frightened. Again, he took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was to happen to him, | Mark 10:32
saying, “Listen! We are going to Jerusalem. There, the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They shall condemn him to death and then he will be handed over to the gentiles; | Mark 10:33
they shall mock and taunt him, spit upon him, flog him and then finally kill him.” | Mark 10:34
