Chapter 36

The Request of James and John

Verse 1: Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and declared, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” | Mark 10:35

And he said to them, “What should I do for you?” | Mark 10:36

And they said to him, “Grant to us, so that we may sit one on your right hand and one on your left, in your glory.” | Mark 10:37

But Jesus told them, “You do not know what you are asking for. Can you drink of the cup that I will drink? Or receive the baptism that I have already received?” | Mark 10:38

They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “You think you are able to drink the same cup, and have the same baptism of fire, | Mark 10:39

but to sit at my left or my right is not mine to give, for there are no such seats. In my Father's kingdom there is no throne, no place of rank above another, for all are one.” | Mark 10:40

When the other disciples heard this, they began to be very angry with James and John. | Mark 10:41

So Jesus called them together and said, “You should know that among the gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers, act as tyrants and abuse their authority the people. | Mark 10:42

Let those who have attained wealth become kings, and let those who possess power renounce it. | Gospel of Thomas 81

But it will not be among you; rather, whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, | Mark 10:43

and whoever desires to be first among you shall be a servant to all. | Mark 10:44

For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve the many.” | Mark 10:45

The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

Next, they came to Jericho. As he and his disciples were walking through Jericho with a large crowd behind them, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting on the side of the road. | Mark 10:46

Upon hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth who was near, he started to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, please have mercy on me!” | Mark 10:47

Many sternly rebuked him so that he should be quiet, but he cried out so much more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” | Mark 10:48

Jesus stood still and said, “Call him to me.” And they called the blind man, telling him, “Have courage; get up, he is calling for you.” | Mark 10:49

So threw off his cloak, sprang up and he came to Jesus. | Mark 10:50

“What do you want me to do for you?”, Jesus asked him. The blind man replied, “My teacher, please let me see again.” | Mark 10:51

Jesus replied, “Go; your faith has healed you”. Immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. | Mark 10:52

Jesus and Zacchaeus

Still passing through Jericho with his disciples, | Luke 19:1

There was a certain man whose name was Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was very rich. | Luke 19:2

He was anxious to see what sort of man Jesus was, but he could not see over the crowd, because he was short in stature. | Luke 19:3

So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus, as he was going to go through that way. | Luke 19:4

When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because I have to stay at your house today.” | Luke 19:5

So he came down quickly and joyfully welcome him. | Luke 19:6

All who saw it began to complain, “He has gone to be a guest of one who is an outcast and sinner.” | Luke 19:7

Zacchaeus standing there said to the Lord, “Look, half of all my possessions I shall give to the poor, and if I have ever defrauded anyone of anything, I pledge to repay them four times as much.” | Luke 19:8

Jesus looked at him and was silent for a time. Then he said, ”You have heard what is required: sell all that you have, give it to the poor, and come, follow me. Half is not all. And you'll remain in your booth tomorrow.

A man cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve my Father and wealth, for wealth is still your master.” Zacchaeus said nothing. The crowd was also silent.

Jesus said, ”The Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. But a man must first know he is lost before he can be found.” | Luke 19:10

And he went into the house. And Zacchaeus remained where he stood.

The Parable of the Ten Pounds

Inside his residence, Zacchaeus stood among them still in his fine clothes, Jesus reclining at the table went on to tell a parable: | Luke 19:11

“A certain man of noble birth journeyed to a distant region to receive royal authority for himself and then return. | Luke 19:12

He summoned ten of his servants and gave them each ten pounds and said to them, ‘Conduct business and trade with these until I come back.’ | Luke 19:13

But the citizens reviled him and sent a delegation soon after him, saying to each other, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ | Luke 19:14

When he returned with royal authority, he ordered those servants to whom he had given the money to discover what they had gained by doing business. | Luke 19:15

The first servant came forward and proudly said, ‘Lord, your pound has produced ten more pounds.’ | Luke 19:16

He said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in this very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ | Luke 19:17

Then the second servant came, humbly saying, ‘Lord, your pound has produced five pounds.’ | Luke 19:18

So he said to him, ‘And you, shall have authority over five cities.’ | Luke 19:19

Then the last servant came, meekly saying, ‘My lord, here is your pound. I kept it safe, wrapped in a piece of cloth, | Luke 19:20

for I was terrified of you, because you are a harsh man; you withdraw what you do not deposit and reap what you do not sow.’ | Luke 19:21

He master replied, ‘I shall judge you by your own words, you worthless and wicked servant! So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? | Luke 19:22

Why, then, did you not deposit my money into the bank? And upon my return, it would have collected interest?’ | Luke 19:23

He said to those standing by, ‘Take back from him the pound and give it to the one who has ten.’ | Luke 19:24

But as for these enemies of mine who oppose my rule. Cast them out into the darkness.’” | Luke 19:27

Let those who have ears, hear. He said nothing more. And those who heard it looked at Zacchaeus. And Zacchaeus looked at the ground.
