Chapter 37

Mary Anoints Jesus

Verse 1: Jesus came to Bethany, six days before the Passover, where Lazarus lived, who was raised from the dead. | John 12:1

2 So they hosted a dinner for Jesus. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining with him. | John 12:2

3 So Mary took a pound of expensive perfume made of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus, then wiped them with her hair. The whole house was filled with the scent of the perfume. | John 12:3

4 But when the disciples saw it, they became displeased and indignant upon seeing this and said, “Why this waste? | Matthew 26:8

5 For this ointment could have been sold at a high price and the proceeds given to the poor.” | Matthew 26:9

6 Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept this perfume for the day of my burial (for Mary understood the word of Jesus and was afraid for him). | John 12:7

7 Do not bother the woman. She has done a wonderful deed for me. | Matthew 26:10

8 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.” | John 12:8

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9 Meanwhile a large crowd learned that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, who was raised from the dead. | John 12:9

10 But the chief priests had planned and schemed to put Lazarus to death as well, | John 12:10

11 for on account of him that many people were leaving the temple and instead were believing in Jesus. | John 12:11

Entering the Temple (Overview)

12 Then he entered Jerusalem and entered the temple courts, and after looking around at everything, for it was already late. He left the temple and went out to Bethany with the twelve. | Mark 11:11

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

13 On the following day in the morning, when were departing from Bethany, Jesus was hungry. | Mark 11:12

14 Seeing a fig tree with leaves in the distance. He went to see if there was any fruit on it. When he came to it, he found nothing on it except leaves, because it was not the season for figs. | Mark 11:13

15 He said to it, “Never again will there be fruit from you!” And the fig tree withered at once. | Matthew 21:19

16 When the disciples saw this, they were marveled and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” | Matthew 21:20

17 “In truth I say to you”, Jesus answered them, “If you have faith and have no doubt, not only will you do what has happened to this fig tree, but even if you say to a mountain, ‘Be lifted up and be hurled into the sea,’ it shall be done.” | Matthew 21:21

18 The Pharisees who saw this then said to each another, “You see, you can do nothing. Look, he cursed the world that has gone after him!” | John 12:19

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

19 Then Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He angrily overturned all the tables of the money changers and the seats of all those who sold doves, | Matthew 21:12

20 and to those who were selling doves he shouted, “Take these things out of here!” | John 2:16

21 and he did not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. | Mark 11:16

22 Then He made a whip of cords and drove them all out of the temple courts, with the sheep and the oxen. He also poured out and scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, | John 2:15

23 He said to them, “You have made this house a den of robbers.” | Matthew 21:13

24 While he was still in the temple courts, the blind and the lame came to him and he cured them. | Matthew 21:14

25 But as soon as the chief priests and the scribes saw all the wonderful things that he did and heard the children shouting out in the temple courts and shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became furious with indignation, | Matthew 21:15

26 they looked for a way to kill him. As they were very afraid of him because the whole crowd was astonished and captivated by his teaching. | Mark 11:18

27 Then the temple leaders said to Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?”, and he replied, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies, the Father has established strength, to silence the enemy and the avenger’?” | Matthew 21:16

28 And when evening came, he left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there. | Mark 11:19, Matthew 21:17

Some Greeks Wish to See Jesus

29 Now there were some Greeks among those who travelled to worship at the feast. | John 12:20

30 They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee and began asking him saying, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” | John 12:21

31 Philip went and told Andrew, then Andrew with Philip went and then told Jesus. | John 12:22

32 But Jesus answered them saying, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. | John 12:23

33 In truth I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and then dies, it remains by itself just a single seed, but if it dies it bears much fruit. | John 12:24

34 Whoever loves their life lose it, and whoever hates their life in this world shall keep it for eternal life. | John 12:25

35 If anyone serves me, they must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be there also. For if anyone serves me, the Father will honor them. | John 12:26

36 Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not over take you. Those who walk in the darkness do not know where they are going. | John 12:35

37 While you have the light, believe in the light, so you may become the children of light. | John 12:36

38 I have come to be the light of this world, so that everyone who does my works will not remain in the darkness. | John 12:46

39 Whoever has come to understand the world has found a corpse, and whoever has found a corpse, the world is not worthy of him.” | Gospel of Thomas 56

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

40 And in the morning as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree dried up and withered from its roots. | Mark 11:20

41 Then Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has dried up and withered.” | Mark 11:21

42 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in my Father, whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.” | Mark 11:22, Mark 11:25

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

43 When Jesus entered the temple courts again and began to teach, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him and demanded, “By what authority are you doing all these things, and who gave you this authority?” | Matthew 21:23

44 Jesus answered, “I shall ask you one question also; if you answer me, then I shall also tell you by what authority I do these things. | Matthew 21:24

45 The rite John practiced at the Jordan, where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or was it from men?” And they began arguing with themselves, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why, then, did you not believe him?’ | Matthew 21:25

46 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the crowd, for all consider John to be a prophet.” | Matthew 21:26

47 So they answered Jesus saying, “We do not know.” And then he told them, “Neither will I tell you then by what authority I am do these things. | Matthew 21:27
