Chapter 4

Arrival in Galilee

Verse 1: And after two days, he departed to travel to Galilee | John 4:43

(for Jesus himself had declared that a prophet has no honor in his own country). | John 4:44

When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, for they had seen everything that he had done in Jerusalem, for they also had also gone to the festival. | John 4:45

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

There was a royal official of king Herod whose son was very sick in Capernaum. | John 4:46

When he heard that Jesus had travelled from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and pleaded to heal his son, who was about to die. | John 4:47

Jesus said to him, “Even if you see signs and wonders you will still not believe.” | John 4:48

The royal official said to him, “Sir, please visit my residence before my little boy dies.” | John 4:49

Jesus said to him, “Go home; your son shall be made well.” The man believed the word that was spoken to him and went on his way. | John 4:50

As he was returning, his wife Joanna hurried to meet him and told him that their child had recovered and was alive. | John 4:51

So he asked them the time when his son started to recover, and she told to him, “Yesterday at one o’clock in the afternoon the fever left him.” | John 4:52

Then the father realized that this was the same hour when Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he told Joanna, and she believed; and when they returned home and told their household, all of them believed. | John 4:53

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

After this there was a Jewish Festival, and Jesus travelled to Jerusalem. | John 5:1

There is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew Bethesda, which has five porches. | John 5:2

In these lay a large number of sick people – ill, blind, lame, and paralyzed. All waiting for the movement of water. | John 5:3

One man was there, had been invalid for thirty-eight years. | John 5:5

When Jesus saw him lying there and realized he had been in that condition for many years, he asked him, “Do you want to become well?” | John 5:6

The invalid answered him, “Sir, I have no one to lift me into the pool the moment the water begins to churn; while I am still struggling to reach the edge, someone else steps down ahead of me.” | John 5:7

Jesus said to him, “Get up! Take up your mat and walk.” | John 5:8

Immediately man was made well, and he picked up his mat and began to walk. Jesus having great pity in his heart, asked the same question to all those that laid there. Now that day was a Sabbath. | John 5:9

So the religious leaders said to the man that had been healed, “This is the Sabbath; you are not permitted to carry your mat.” | John 5:10

But he answered, “The man who healed me told me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” | John 5:11

They asked him, “Where is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your mat and walk’?” | John 5:12

Now the man who was healed did not know who or where he was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that had assembled there because of the commotion. | John 5:13

Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple courts and said to him, “Look, you have been made well! But do not sin any more, or something worse may happen to you.” | John 5:14

The man left and brought word to the religious leaders that his healer was, in fact, Jesus. | John 5:15

Because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the religious leaders started to persecute him. | John 5:16

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working even now, and so I am working as well.” | John 5:17

For this reason the Jewish leaders sought to kill him, because he was not only violating the Sabbath but also said that God was his Father, thereby making himself equal to their God. | John 5:18

Imprisonment of John the Baptist

Herod the ruler, who had been repeatedly rebuked by John the Baptist because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and about all the evil deeds which he had done, | Luke 3:19

locked John up in prison, thereby accomplishing a crowning feat. | Luke 3:20

The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth

Meanwhile Jesus left Jerusalem and came to his hometown, and the disciples followed him. | Mark 6:1

On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and everyone who heard him were amazed, for they had never heard this before. They asked, “Where did he get all of this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? Look at the powerful miracles done by his hands! | Mark 6:2

All who were present spoke well of him, and were amazed at the beautiful words of grace that came from his mouth. And they said, “Is he not Joseph’s son? | Luke 4:22

Isn't he the craftsman, Mary's son and the brothers of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters living here with us?” Then they took offense at him, not believing his words; | Mark 6:3

And he said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this parable, ‘Physician, cure thyself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your own hometown the same wonders we’ve heard you performed in Capernaum!’” | Luke 4:23

Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are respected everywhere, except their hometown and not among their own relatives and even in their own house.” | Mark 6:4

And he said, “In truth I say to you, no prophet is ever truly welcomed in his hometown.” | Luke 4:24

And he could not perform any miracles due to the lack of belief in many, except those that he laid his hands on, the few sick people present in the temple and cured them. | Mark 6:5

And he was astonished at their unbelief. | Mark 6:6

When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was consumed with fury against him. | Luke 4:28

But he slipped through their midst and quietly departed. | Luke 4:30
