Chapter 5
Relocation to Capernaum
Verse 1: Jesus then left Nazareth and made his way to Capernaum by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali, | Matthew 4:13
At that time Jesus began to proclaim to all, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near or at hand.” | Matthew 4:17
The Man with an Unclean Spirit
Upon entering Capernaum, when the next Sabbath came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. | Mark 1:21
They were astonished at his teaching, for he spoke to them as one having actual authority and not as the scribes. | Mark 1:22
In that moment, a man in the synagogue who was gripped by a foul, unclean spirit shrieked, | Mark 1:23
and he cried out, “Leave us be; What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? We know who you are, that you come from the realm of light above!” | Mark 1:24
But Jesus sternly rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” | Mark 1:25
And the foul unclean spirit, after throwing the man into convulsions, cried with a loud voice and left him. | Mark 1:26
They were all amazed, and they started questioning each another, “What is this? A new kind of teaching with authority! He gives orders to the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” | Mark 1:27
Immediately his fame began to spread in all directions, throughout the region around Galilee. | Mark 1:28
Healing Peter's Mother-in-Law
Soon after, Jesus entered Peter’s house and he saw his mother-in-law in bed, sick with a fever; | Matthew 8:14
he touched her hand, and the fever immediately left her, and then she got of bed and began to serve them. | Matthew 8:15
Jesus Heals Many
When it was evening, many brought to him those who were possessed by demons. Many cried out, “We know who you are and where you come from”, and he rebuked them and would not allow to them to speak and cast out the spirits with a word and cured all who were sick. | Matthew 8:16, Luke 4:41
A Preaching Tour in Galilee
In the early morning, while it was still dark, he went out to a deserted place, where he prayed to the Father. | Mark 1:35
And Simon and his companions searched everywhere for him. | Mark 1:36
When they found him, they exclaimed, “Everyone is looking for you.” | Mark 1:37
He answered, “Let us go forth into the neighboring towns, so I can proclaim the message there also, for that is why my Father sent me here.” | Mark 1:38
And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues, casting out demons and healing the sick. | Mark 1:39
Jesus Cleanses a Man with a Skin Disease
A man with leprosy came to him kneeling and begging for help, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” | Mark 1:40
Moved with pity and compassion, Jesus stretched forth his hand and touched him and said to him, “I am willing. Your faith has made you made clean!” | Mark 1:41
Immediately the leprosy went away, and he was made clean. | Mark 1:42
And then Jesus, after sternly warning him to tell no-one, immediately sent him away, | Mark 1:43
saying to him, “Be careful not to say anything to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and as Moses has commanded, give your offerings as a testimony to them.” | Mark 1:44
But he went out immediately and began to freely spread his testimony, so that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed out in the country, and people flocked to him from all directions. | Mark 1:45
However, there were times he would he withdraw to deserted places and pray to the Father. | Luke 5:16
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
Now after some days he returned to Capernaum, and news spread that he was within someone's home. | Mark 2:1
So many gathered together that there was no longer room for all of them, not even near the door, and he spoke the word to them. | Mark 2:2
Then some people came, four of them carrying a paralytic and tried to bring him over. | Mark 2:3
And when they were unable to get near to Jesus due to the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and after having broken through it, they lowered down the mat on which the paralytic lay. | Mark 2:4
Seeing their faith, Jesus looked at the paralyzed man and said, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” | Mark 2:5
Now some of the scribes were sitting there and started questioning in their hearts, | Mark 2:6
“How dare this man speak like this? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins except God alone?” | Mark 2:7
At once Jesus intuitively aware that they were discussing these questions among themselves, said to them, “Why do you thus argue in your minds about this? | Mark 2:8
Is it easier to tell this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or tell him, ‘Get up and take your mat and walk’? | Mark 2:9
But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority and power on earth to forgive sins”, then he said to the paralytic | Mark 2:10
“I say to you, get up, take up your mat, and return to your home.” | Mark 2:11
And immediately he stood up and picked up his mat and went out before all of them, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have seen incredible things today.” | Mark 2:12, Luke 5:26
The Call of Matthew
As Jesus was walking along back in his home town, he saw a man called Matthew working at the tax-collection booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And the fellow got up, left everything and followed him. | Matthew 9:9
Then Levi hosted great banquet for Jesus at his house, where a large gathering of tax collectors and various guests filled the room, | Luke 5:29
And as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, many sat with him and his disciples. | Matthew 9:10
When the Pharisees saw all this, they complained to his disciples, “Why does your teacher dine with tax collectors, outcasts and sinners?” | Matthew 9:11
But when Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but they that are sick. | Matthew 9:12
Go and learn the meaning of these words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ Because I have not come to call the righteous but those who you declare to be outcast, profane, and sinners.” | Matthew 9:13
