Chapter 47

Peter Denies Jesus Again

Verse 1: Then about an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man also was certainly with him, for he is a Galilean and he talks like one.” | Luke 22:59, Mark 14:70

But Peter began to curse, “Man, I swear to God that I do not know who you are talking about!” At that very moment, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. | Luke 22:60, Mark 14:71

After Peter said this, Jesus turned and looked at him, his face was bruised and swollen. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” | Luke 22:61, Mark 14:72

And he went outside the court and wept bitterly. | Luke 22:62

Simon Before Pilate

Then the officers of the temple police brought Simon the Zealot before Pilate, bound, his face bearing the marks of what had been done to him in secret.

Pilate looked upon him and saw immediately what manner of testimony this was. He said to the chief priests, “This man has been broken. What weight do you place on what a broken man says?”

The chief priests answered, “He is one of the twelve who followed Jesus of Nazareth. He himself has sworn before the council that Jesus is the leader of those who lift their heel against Rome.”

Pilate said to Simon, “Is this true? Is the man called Jesus of Nazareth the leader of your rebellion against Caesar?”

Simon opened his mouth and no sound came at first. Then, as one who has already died within himself, he said, “They have compelled me to say so.”

Pilate studied him in silence. Then he said to the chief priests, “I will have Jesus flogged. That is satisfaction enough. Then I will release him.”

But the chief priests pressed forward and said, “If you release him, you release a greater danger than you know. This man goes about all of Israel proclaiming openly that he is the Son of God.”

At these words Pilate's face changed and turned pale.

They continued, “There is one Son of God, and he sits in Rome. If Caesar learns that his governor in Judea heard this claim and let the man walk free, what will Caesar say of you?

This man is not merely a teacher of the people. He is a seed of insurrection. Today he speaks. Tomorrow ten thousand take up the sword in his name. Stop him now, while it can still be done quietly, or answer for what follows.”

Pilate looked once more at Simon, who stood with his eyes cast down, unable to meet the gaze of anyone in that place.

And Pilate said nothing further about releasing Jesus.

Jesus before Pilate

The temple police bound Jesus and took him from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters in Praetorium. By now it was early morning. Jesus entered, but they themselves did not follow and enter the headquarters, so as to avoid being defiled ritually and to be able to eat the Passover. | John 18:28

So Pilate went out to them and asked, “Is this the man that you have brought accusations against?” | John 18:29

They answered him, “If this man were not a criminal and doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” | John 18:30

Pilate told them, “Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him according to your own law!” The chief priests replied, “Rome does not permit us to put anyone to death.” | John 18:31

And they started to accuse Jesus, saying, “We found this man inciting our nation, leading many astray, forbidding the people to pay taxes to Caesar and telling everyone that he himself is the Messiah, a king.” | Luke 23:2

Then Pilate entered the headquarters again and questioned Jesus, asking him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” | John 18:33

Jesus answered him, “Do you ask this on your own accord, or did you hear it from others?” | John 18:34

And the chief priests and elders outside accused him of many things, he did not answer. | Mark 15:3

But they were maliciously insistent and cried, “He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place.” | Luke 23:5

Then Pilate asked Jesus, “Do you not hear the number of accusations they make against you?” | Matthew 27:13

But he gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement. | Matthew 27:14

Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew! Your own nation and the chief priests of the temple have handed you over to me. Tell me, what is it that have you done?” | John 18:35

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being delivered to the temple authorities. But as it happens, my kingdom is not from this place.” | John 18:36

Then Pilate questioned him again, “So you are a king?” and Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For I was born to come into the world and to testify to the truth to those that would hear it. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” | John 18:37

Pilate demurred and asked him, “Yes. What is truth?” | John 18:38

Pilate then asked him again, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered him, “If you say so.” | Mark 15:2

Then the chief priests repeatedly accused Jesus of many things again. | Mark 15:3

Pilate asked him again, “Do you have you no answer? Listen to how many charges they bring against you.” | Mark 15:4

But Jesus made no further reply, and Pilate started to wonder. | Mark 15:5

Jesus before Herod

Pilate wanting a way out, inquired whether the man was a Galilean. | Luke 23:6

And upon learning that Jesus was under the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent Him to Herod, who happened to be in Jerusalem at that time. | Luke 23:7

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had been wanting to see Jesus for a long time because he had heard many stories and was wanting to see him perform some sign. | Luke 23:8

Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but he gave no answer. | Luke 23:9

The chief priests and the scribes were standing behind Herod vehemently accusing Jesus. | Luke 23:10

Even Herod with his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him; then they dressed him in an elegant robe and sent him back to Pilate. | Luke 23:11

That very day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this they had been enemies of one another. | Luke 23:12
