Chapter 6
Plucking Grain on the Sabbath
Verse 1: After some time Jesus was walking through grain fields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to gather heads of grain that had fallen to the ground and to eat. | Matthew 12:1
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to Jesus, “Look, your disciples are doing what is against the law to do on the Sabbath.” | Matthew 12:2
He said to them, “Have you not read in the law, 'You shall not reap to the very edges of your field, nor gather the gleanings of your harvest'?
We do not cut the stalk; we do not detach from the earth. We gather only what has already fallen, what the Lord has given for the poor and the hungry.
This is not the work of reaping, but the gift of gleanings.
But if you had learned what was said before, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have been so quick to condemn the innocent.” | Matthew 12:7
But the Pharisees were silent, unable to answer him. Then they went out and conferred with one another, saying, “By what authority does he interpret the law in this way?”
And they were filled with fury and rage and spoke together with each other what they might do to Jesus. | Luke 6:11
The Man with a Withered Hand
Once again Jesus entered a synagogue, and there was a man who had a withered hand and arm shrivelled up. | Mark 3:1
They were watching him closely to see whether he would work on the Sabbath, and they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” so that they might accuse him. | Mark 3:2, Matthew 12:10
But Jesus said to them, “What if one of you had only one sheep and it fell into a pit on the Sabbath? Wouldn’t you grab hold of it and pull it out? | Matthew 12:11
How much more precious or valuable is a person than a sheep!” | Matthew 12:12
And he called out to the man who had the shrivelled arm and withered hand, “Come forward.” | Mark 3:3
Then he asked them, “Is it lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath, to save or to kill a life?” But the Pharisees were silent. | Mark 3:4
Grieved and indignant, he looked around at them with anger; he was saddened at the hardness of their heart's and said to the man with compassion in his voice, “Stretch out your hand.” and as he did so, his hand was restored. | Mark 3:5
The Pharisees left the Synagogue in fury and rage for the law had been broken again and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, plotting how to destroy him. | Mark 3:6
A Multitude at the Seaside
Then Jesus went away with his disciples to the sea, followed by a great multitude of people from Galilee. | Mark 3:7
As word of spread of all that he was doing, crowds of great numbers came from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, far beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. | Mark 3:8
He instructed his disciples to have a small boat ready for him close by, because of the large crowd, so that they would not crush him, | Mark 3:9
for he had cured many, and so people kept crowding upon him, that all who were sick might touch him. | Mark 3:10
Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and screamed out, “You are the from the realm of light above, have mercy on us!” | Mark 3:11
But he rebuked them, forbidding them not to make him known. | Mark 3:12
Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles
Now during that time he set out to the mountain to pray in solitude, and he spent the night in prayer to the Father. | Luke 6:12
And when day came, he called his closest disciples and of them chose twelve, whom he also named apostles: | Luke 6:13
Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, | Luke 6:14
and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Judas Iscariot, | Luke 6:15
and Judas son of James, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, who later betrayed Jesus. | Luke 6:16
Jesus Heals a Centurion’s servant
After Jesus returned to Capernaum. | Luke 7:1
A centurion had a servant whom he valued highly and who was ill and almost at the point of death. | Luke 7:2
And upon hearing about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to search for him, so that they could ask him to come and save his servant. | Luke 7:3
When they found Jesus, they begged him earnestly, saying, “He is truly deserving of your help, | Luke 7:4
for he loves our people, and he built a synagogue for us.” | Luke 7:5
And Jesus went with them, but when they were not far from the house, the centurion sent word with his subordinates to say, “Lord, do not go to any trouble, for I am not worthy of the honor of your visit; | Luke 7:6
therefore I did not think myself worthy to come to you, they say you are a great man. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. | Luke 7:7
For I also am a man placed under authority, with many soldiers under me, and I will say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and then to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and the servant does it.” | Luke 7:8
When Jesus heard these things, he was amazed and delighted; turning around to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, nowhere in Israel have I found such faith as this!” | Luke 7:9
When the elders who had been sent to find Jesus returned to the house, they found the servant in perfect health. | Luke 7:10
Jesus Raises the Widow’s Son at Nain
Shortly after he travelled to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd followed him. | Luke 7:11
As he approached the town gate, a man who had died was being carried out, an only son and she was a widow. His wife Susanna was also weeping with her and with them was a large crowd from the town. | Luke 7:12
When the Lord saw them, he was moved with compassion and said, “Do not cry.” | Luke 7:13
Then he approached them and touched the coffin, and the bearers stopped. And said, “Young man, I say to you, rise!” | Luke 7:14
The dead man sat up and started to speak, and Jesus presented him to his mother and wife. | Luke 7:15
And then fear came upon every one of them, and they all glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has appeared with us!” and “God has visited his people!” | Luke 7:16
And the news about him went throughout the whole of Judea and all the nearby regions. | Luke 7:17
