Chapter 44
The Promise of Fidelity
Verse 1: If you love me then you will keep my only commandment. | John 14:15
Recognise what is within you, for that is your guide, now and always.
This is the ultimate truth, which the world cannot receive, because it neither looks inward nor knows what it carries.
But you know it, because my Father already dwells in you.
In a little while the world will see me no longer, but you shall see me; because I live, if you believe me, then you also will live. | John 14:19
And on that day you shall know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. | John 14:20
Those who keep my commandments are those who love me, and those who love me shall be loved by my Father, and I will also love them and I will be in them.” | John 14:21
Judas (not Iscariot) asked, “Lord, how is it that you will be in us and not in the world?” | John 14:22
Jesus replied, “If someone loves me, they shall keep my word, and my Father and I will love them, and we will both come to them and make our home with them. | John 14:23
Whoever does not love me does not keep my word, and the word which you have heard is not mine but is from the devil of this world. | John 14:24
I have said all these things to you while I am here with you still. | John 14:25
Peace I leave with you; my peace I am giving to you and I do not give to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed, and do not be afraid. | John 14:27
You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, but I will always be with you.’ If you loved me, you would be rejoicing that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. | John 14:28
And now that I have told you this before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe. | John 14:29
I can no longer speak much with you all, for the ruler of this world is coming for us. He has no power over me, | John 14:30
but I have broken the laws of this world, and for that I am to be punished by its ruler. Rise, let us be on our way. | John 14:31
Jesus the True Vine
Know that I am the true vine, and my Father is the keeper of the vineyard. | John 15:1
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, and every branch that bears fruit he prunes so that it bears even more fruit. | John 15:2
You have already been enlightened by the word which I have spoken to you. | John 15:3
Dwell in me just as I dwell in you. Just as the branch can bear no any fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine and neither can you unless you dwell in me. | John 15:4
I am the vine and you all are the branches. Those who dwell in me and I in them will bear much fruit, because apart from me you are not able to do anything. | John 15:5
Anyone who does not dwell in me is thrown out like a branch and dries up; these branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and are burned. | John 15:6
If you dwell in me and my words dwell in you, you will have eternal life. | John 15:7
This is how my Father is glorified, so that you bear much fruit and become disciples of mine. | John 15:8
As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Continue in my love. | John 15:9
If you keep my commandments, you will dwell in my love, exactly as I have kept my Father’s commandment and dwell in his love. | John 15:10
I have told you all these things, so that my joy may dwell in you and that your joy may be made complete. | John 15:11
Again, this is my only commandment, that you each love one another as I have loved you. | John 15:12
No one has greater love than this, that one should lay down their life for another, his friend. | John 15:13
And you are my friend, if you do what I command of you. | John 15:14
No longer do I call you servants, because what the master is doing the servant does not know. Instead I have called you friends, because all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you. | John 15:15
You did not choose me, but I have chosen you all. And I appointed you to go and bear much fruit, and your fruit will endure, so that the Father will be glorified. | John 15:16
I am giving you this command so that you may love each other. | John 15:17
The World’s Hatred
If the world hates you, understand that it hated me first. | John 15:18
Those that do not follow my words, the world loves you as its own. But those who do follow my words, the world will hate you, because you are not of the world, for you have chosen not to be of the world. | John 15:19
Remember the word that I spoke to you, ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecute me, they will persecute you as well; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. | John 15:20
But they shall do all these things to you because of my name, since they do not know the one who sent me. | John 15:21
If I had not come and spoke to them, they would not be guilty of any sin. Now, however they have no excuse for their sin. | John 15:22
Whoever hates me and my word, also hates my Father. | John 15:23
If I had not performed among them the works that no one has ever done, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen and also hated both me and my Father.” | John 15:24
