Chapter 45

The Work of the a disciple

Verse 1: “I have told you these things to try and keep you from falling away. | John 16:1

They will throw you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when those who kill you shall think that by doing so they are doing their God's desire. | John 16:2

And they will do all this because they have not known my Father or me. | John 16:3

But I have told you these things so that when their time comes, you shall remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. | John 16:4

But now I am going to my Father who sent me, yet not one of you wonders and asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ | John 16:5

Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things. | John 16:6

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, for when I leave, you will seek what I have given you within yourselves. | John 16:7, Gospel of Thomas 70

And when you find it, you shall prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: | John 16:8, Gospel of Thomas 2

about sin, because they live in poverty not knowing themselves; | John 16:9, Gospel of Thomas 3

about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you shall see me no longer; what you have within you will save you if you bring it forth; | John 16:10, Gospel of Thomas 70

about judgment, because the devil of this world has already been condemned. | John 16:11

I still have much to tell you, but you cannot endure them now. | John 16:12

Seek and you will find. But what you have asked me about during these days and I did not tell you then. Now I do desire to tell, but you do not ask about them. | Gospel of Thomas 92

When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living Father, for there is nothing hidden which will not become manifest. | Gospel of Thomas 3, Gospel of Thomas 5

What you discover within will glorify me, because it is what I have measured out for you. | John 16:14, Gospel of Thomas 13

Everything that the Father has is mine. Because of this I said that he shall take what is mine and share it with you. | John 16:15

Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

A little while, and you shall no longer see me, and after a little while, I will return.” | John 16:16

Then some of his disciples asked one another, “Why is he telling us, ‘A little while, and you shall no longer see me, and after a little while, I will return,’ and ‘because I am going to the Father’?” | John 16:17

They kept asking, “What is the meaning of ‘a little while’? We do not understand what he is speaking about.” | John 16:18

Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves why I said, ‘A little while, and you shall no longer see me, and a little while, and you shall see me again’? | John 16:19

In truth, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will then turn into joy. | John 16:20

When a woman has pain in child birth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. | John 16:21

So you have be sorrowful no and experience pain soon, but then I shall see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will ever take your joy from you. | John 16:22

On that day you shall ask nothing from me. | John 16:23

Until now you have asked nothing in my name either. Instead keep my commandment, so that your joy may be made complete. | John 16:24

Peace for the Disciples

“I have said all these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I can no longer speak to you in this way but shall tell you plainly of the Father. | John 16:25

On that day you will do my will in my name, | John 16:26

for my Father loves you because you also love me and believe that I come from him. | John 16:27

I came forth from the Father and have entered into the world and now I am leaving the world and returning to the Father.” | John 16:28

His disciples said, “See, now you are speaking plainly and without any figure of speech! | John 16:29

Now we understand that you know all these things and do not need for anyone to ask you questions. Because of this, we believe that you came from God.” | John 16:30

Jesus replied, “Really? Do you now believe? | John 16:31

Look, the hour has come, when you shall be scattered, each one to his own home, and I will be left alone. And yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. | John 16:32

I have said these things to you so that in me you can have peace. In the world you will face persecution, but take courage: I will overcome the devil of this world!” | John 16:33

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Soon after, Jesus went with them to a courtyard, a place called Gethsemane and asked them, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” | Matthew 26:36

With him he took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and anguish and distress overcame him, | Matthew 26:37

saying to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow, to the point of death. Remain here, and stay awake with me.” | Matthew 26:38

And going a little farther, he collapsed on the ground and prayed, “Abba, My Father, for you all things are possible, if it is possible, let me not drink from this cup.” | Matthew 26:39

Then an angel from the Father appeared to him and strengthened his resolve. | Luke 22:43

And in his anguish he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground. | Luke 22:44

Then he returned to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he asked them, “So, none of you could stay awake with me for one hour? | Matthew 26:40

Stay awake and pray that you may not fall into temptation; hold fast to what I have given you, for it will save you; without it, you will be consumed. | Matthew 26:41

Woe to the flesh that depends on the soul; woe to the soul that depends on the flesh.” | Gospel of Thomas 112

For the second time, Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass from me unless I drink it, then your will be done.” | Matthew 26:42

Again he returned and found them asleep, for their eyes were heavy and they did not know how to answer him. | Matthew 26:43, Mark 14:40

So he left them again and prayed to the Father for the third time, saying the same words. | Matthew 26:44

Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! My time has come, and the Son of Man is given over to those whose law demands it. | Matthew 26:45, Mark 14:41

Rise up, we have to be going. Look, my betrayer is approaching!” | Mark 14:42
